Starting your move off on the right foot helps make your transition that much smoother. The best place to begin is with packing. You’ll find these tips are helpful for local and out-of-state moves:

Tip  1

Plan your storage space.  Place those items that you may need to access often in the front.  Allow for walkways.

Tip 2

Keep an open box of Decon at all time for prevention of mice.

Tip 3

Make up an inventory of your stored items and keep it in a safe place at home or in a safety deposit box.

Tip 4

Place your storage items on 2"x4" boards or on pallets to guard against dampness.  Any concrete floor may become cold and damp.

Tip 5

CAUTION: Do not store anything combustible (e.g., paint thinner, gasoline, solvents, paints, etc.).

Tip 6

List contests of boxes on all four sides.  Number the boxes, seal them with tape.

Tip 7

Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard, marked fragile and stacked on end.

Tip 8

Furniture with drawers can be used as storage placed for pictures, knickknacks, China, silverware, small items, etc.  Wrap them in tablecloths, towels or blankets to prevent breakage.

Tip 9

Larger appliances make excellent "packing cases" for blankets, towels, tablecloths and clothes.

Tip 10

Shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans.  Stack extra cans inside one another.

Tip 11

Tables having removable legs should be broken down to save space.

Tip 12

Sofas and love seats can be stores on end to save space.  Always place a protective cover under the item on the concrete.  Cushions should be wrapped in plastic and placed on top.

Tip 13

Cover stuffed furniture with cardboard or blankets to protect against dust.

Tip 14

If you stand mattresses on their side, prop them up so they stand straight.  If you do not, they may tend to bend out of shape and become lumpy.
